Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This encompassed seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a record of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The legal document underscores that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is located around 8 miles from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist American leader Donald Trump, causing him to enact a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being held in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a custody hearing on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that he be permitted to leave his home for healthcare, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

He was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed official structures in the federal district, the capital city.

The law enforcement took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to step in, restore order and return him to office.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him running in the next presidential race.
